History in the Making

Our world has changed dramatically since the beginning of this year. You can tell there is something in the air. A cloud of uncertainty, a weight of desperation because of the loss of life our planet is experiencing. Fear has crippled the earth and we have retreated to our dwellings to shield us from the disaster outside. We all declared that 2020 would be our year, the year of great happenings. Except, that didn’t happen. Right at the beginning, we were dumped with the crisis of our lifetime. At first, I didn’t understand the implications of it. I didn’t understand the meaning of it. I still don’t.
But what I do understand is that this time, right now, is history in the making. This is our generation’s 9/11 or our lifetime’s Black Plague. These situations are comparable because each one historically changed how we interact with one another, view our own mortality and experience life. Right now, we don't have the luxury of ordering a product on Amazon for it to come the next day. No longer do we enjoy the liberty of walking into a restaurant to dine with our friends and family.
I guarantee you that our lives will not be the same after we make it through this storm. What I want to impress on you all is that our reactions during this time matter. They matter tremendously because the generations to come will look at this very situation in a textbook for their curriculum. The sickness, immobility and the death that we are experiencing won’t feel real to them. But it is real to us.
It will just be a story they are reading on a page, a distant memory of the past meanwhile it is our terrifying present.
I urge you to think about that, to think about what you are doing right now to contribute to the history. We all have a role to play. We will all be remembered for something. So make this time of confinement count; do something that matters. Are you going to let time race by, leaving you with nothingness? Or, are you going to take advantage of this season to yield creativity, produce innovation and spread love? This is our opportunity to write history. Don’t let history write us.
